Andrew Symonds' Breakthrough Test vs South Africa 05/06

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Following a first ball duck in the first innings, the knives were out for Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds in the second test of the 2005/06 home series against South Africa...

With captain Ricky Ponting desperate to give Symonds the confidence he needed to be successful, he asked his allrounder to bowl his seamers in South Africa's first innings. Tearing through the South African middle and lower order, Roy picked up the wickets of Mark Boucher, a well set Herschelle Gibbs and Shaun Pollock with his celebrations epitomising the desperation of wanting to contribute to his team and the frustration of a poor start to his test career.

A rejuvenated Symonds returned on day four with the license to biff in the second innings, he and good friend Matthew Hayden proceeded to destroy the South African attack during the afternoon session. Symonds' brutal 72 included six sixes and marked his arrival as a test quality batsman.

With confidence sky high, he delivered the knockout punch in the evening session by removing dangerman Jacques Kallis and first test hero Jacques Rudolph in a successful spell before stumps.
